After spending 4 days in Provincetown at the Cape Dory rendezvous, I finally took pity on Tom’s 6’2” frame and conceded that “Dog Star” is indeed too small to live aboard for more than a night. We’re reluctantly parting with this fabulous little boat because we just bought an equally fabulous CD28 and can’t keep both.

She’s small and maneuverable and can sail around on the ebbing tide long after the larger, deeper keeled boats are safely on their moorings. But she can hold her own with those same boats taking 4-foot seas and 25+ winds beautifully. She danced over the swells from Duxbury to Provincetown with the grace and heart of a big boat – I don’t think she knows she’s only 19 feet. The trailer and her portable size made it easy to pluck her out when hurricanes threatened and then put her back in after the danger passed—allowing us to keep her safe AND keep the already too-short New England sailing season going a little longer. We’ve been out in dead calm, near gales and the washing-machine chop around Bug Light. She takes it all in stride. She’s been a lively, challenging, patient and forgiving teacher. Did I say reluctantly parting…
